Needle in time saves many in breast carcinoma

Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2019, Vol 10, Issue 1

Abstract

Background: Breast carcinoma is the most common cancer in females in the world with high rate of morbidity and mortality. Various parameters play a role in prognosis, like grading, staging, hormone receptor status. One of the important factors being histological grade of the tumor. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy is gaining popularity as first line of treatment before surgical excision in recent years. Hence cytological grading on FNAC smears will allow the assessment of the tumor in situ and guide in selection of the most suitable treatment. Aim: To compare cytological and histopathological grading of infiltrating ductal carcinoma. Methods: It is a 2 years study done from Jan 2015-Dec 2016. Total of 60 cases of infiltrating ductal carcinoma cases which had undergone both FNAC and histopathological examination were considered. Cytological grading was done by Robinson’s grade, while histopathological grading was done by Modified Scarff Bloom Richarson grade. Results: Cytological grading (Robinson’s Grading) correlated well with histopathological grading (Modified Scarff Bloom Richardson Grading System). Conclusion: Cytological grading is comparable to histological grading and can be considered as a useful parameter to predict tumor behavior and in selecting neoadjuvant chemotherapy.
