Abstract
Karol Dziuda GERMAN CULTURAL AND ECONOMIC ASSOCIATION IN POLAND IN ŁÓDŹ AREA The purpose of this paper is to present the activity of the German Cultural and Economic Union in Poland (German: Deutscher Kultur- und Wirtschaftsbund in Polen; further on DKuWB) in Łódź. DKuWB was an organization formed by Polish citizens of German origin, standing on the grounds of preserving German culture, economic development of the German minority in Poland, and pacifism and loyalty to the Polish state. Establishment of the organization in the late twenties of the twentieth century led to changes in the political life of the German minority in Poland. From the first years of its existence, the area in which DKuWB manifested the greatest activity was Łódź Voivodeship. The support provided by the organization to the political camp of Józef Piłsudski, both at national and international level, was reciprocated by governmental aid in the process of expansion of DKuWB. The organization had obtained the strongest position in the community of the German national minority in the first half of the thirties, but in the following years DKuWB started to gradually lose its social and financial backing in the face of a rapid increase in public support for the nationalist organizations.
