Nominative Space of English News Discourse in the Post-truth Epoch: Argumentative Tendencies

Abstract

The research deals with the functions of nominative units in the English news discourse in the post-truth epoch when objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief. The material of the research is the BBC news stories. The paper applies rhetorical methods to revealing the argumentative potential of news stories. The results obtained show that nominative units in the contemporary English news discourse denote four types of arguments: facts, maxims, statistical data and anonymous sources. The paper reveals a reduction in the nominal units referring to facts and general beliefs shared by the majority of the audience. Meanwhile quantifiers once used as a reliable means of objectivity have acquired a number of persuasive functions evoking the feelings of indignation, respect, surprise, condemnation. The reference to the anonymous sources is carried out by abstract units denoting different groups of people. The conclusions indicate that modern news discourse has a tendency to transforming into a persuasive tool determining the choice of particular nominal units.
