Abstract

Religious issues of Pieśni sobie śpiewane, the only volume of poetry by Kon-stancja Benisławska (1747-1806), are presented in the article. The author lived in the area of the former Polish Livonia. Benisławska‟s religious poetry, both due to the distance from the centre of the Age of Enlightenment in the Republic of Poland and her feminine authorship, can be consid-ered as a truly original phenomenon on the literary map of the Polish-Lithuanian Common-wealth. The text uniqueness consists in the poetic interpretation of canonical prayers, which obtain a highly personal manner thanks to the poet‟s intention. As a result, Benisławska creates an interesting image of faith and religiosity by using both metaphors borrowed from the Spanish mysticism and the non-canonical image of Mary, in which she becomes almost equal to God. The poet‟s literary works, therefore, do not match the stereotypical image of the Enlightenment lit-erature, which is associated with poets from the classicistic and cultural circle centred around Stanisław August. The aim of the article is to analyse the aspect of Benisławska‟s work more precisely.
