Occlusal indices in the assessment of expediency and effectiveness of orthodontic treatment

Abstract
A fairly concise assessment is presented of worldwide renowned occlusal indices, IOTN/DHC, IOTN/AC, ICON, DAI, and PAR. Some attention will be paid to less popular indices that bear relevance to the foregoing, the Swedish normative SMBI and the Norwegian index NOTI. The California modification, HLD(CalMod), of an old occlusal index, HLD, is alluded as an interesting example of law enforced normatives relating to orthodontic care. Attention is drawn to merits and demerits of the occlusal indices concerned as well as to the scope of applications thereof. As far as the latter are concerned, professional applications are considered, with a view to orthodontic treatment need and qualification thresholds, orthodontic treatment effectiveness and complexity, as well as to epidemiological studies; included are some remarks on subjective attitudes of laypersons relating to orthodontic treatment need.
