ON THE ISSUE OF FUNCTIONING OF THE UKRAINIAN LANGUAGE AT THE IMPERIAL ROYAL STATE RAILWAY IN EASTERN GALICIA

Abstract
Actuality of the research. Being a part of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, Eastern Galicia was given to the Poles. Not leaving anyhope for the revival of the former Poland, the Poles tried to deny the distinctiveness of the Ukrainian people, and therefore the language itself. Almost all senior positions in the governments of that time were held by the representatives of the Polish nation. Local officers made great efforts to limit the functioning of the Ruska (Ukrainian) language in all spheres of life: at schools, in governments, in courts as well as in all public institutions. There was no exception at the state railway as well. The submitted paper is the first attempt to analyze the situation around the functioning of the Ruska (Ukrainian) language at the state railways of Eastern Galicia. The purpose of the article: to present regulations that would regulate the right of the Ruska (Ukrainian) language at imperial-royal state railways of Eastern Galicia, to describe efforts of the (Ukrainian) residents of Galicia to defend the rights of their native language. The descriptive method is applied in this paper. The periodical materials of the second half of the 19th century as well as the law published in the „Journal of the state laws” are used here. The research results can be used while teaching Ukrainian history and language course or while writing a monographic research.
