Journal Title: Слов’янський збірник - Year 2015, Vol 0, Issue 19
Abstract
The article deals with comparative constructions in proverbs and sayings in modern Russian language. The purpose of the article is to identify the semantic features of the conjunctional formations taken from V. I. Dahl’s „Proverbs of the Russian people”. The object is semantic and syntactic peculiarities of the comparative relations in proverbs and sayings. Мethodology. Descriptive and analytical methods, those of component analysis and semantic explications are used. Finding. The incomplete identification of the subject (S) and the object (O) is realised in the formations with the conjunction ‘that’. „S that O” constructions are the result of the compression of the „S is the same as O on the basis of X” constructions. The practical value of the research is that it may be used while teaching a course in Modern Russian Lexicology and Phraseology, while creating a dictionary of Russian folk comparisons and solving theoretical questions on Comparative Semantics. Results. The contexts of linguistic metaphors of extended proverbs and sayings deepen the figurative meaning and reveal the associative links of the unextended subject and object under comparison. The investigation of the proverbs and sayings with the conjunction ‘that’ demonstrates a specific semantic feature of such constructions: it is an incomplete identification of the compared subject and object, which is carried out on the basis of their specific features. Such identification in the proverbs and sayings with the unextended subject and object is carried out on the basis of various metaphorical transferences.
