Orthodontic treatment with skeletal anchorage - patients view

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2012, Vol 65, Issue 1

Abstract

Introduction: The stabilization of teeth in orthodontic treatment can be achieved either by using traditional anchorage elements such as the Goshgarian arch or Nance appliance or by using novel techniques such as microscrews or InPlants™.Aim of study: Compare feedback from patients concerning usage fixed appliance and tiresomeness different orthodontic procedure during orthodontic treatment.Materials and methods: The study was carried out on 24 patients. Absoanchor® microscrews were used in the patients from the first study group (SG I) and InPlants™ were used in the patients from the second study group (SG II). All of the patients were asked to respond to a questionnaire. A Numeral Rating Scale was used to assess the results, and afterwards statistical analysis of the data was performed. The statistical significance threshold was taken to be p<0.05.Results: All of the obtained values fit in either the mild or moderate discomfort ranges. The patients with the microscrews gave a more positive assessment of the wearing of the fixed orthodontic appliance. They experienced less fear of tooth extraction and less pain while wearing a fixed appliance as compared to patients with InPlants. Conclusions: Skeletal anchorage techniques did not create any greater problems for the patients, but patients with microscrews reported the least discomfort as compared with patients using other anchorage elements.
