OSTAP GRITSAJ AND ALEXANDER KUPRIN: ORIENTAL DISCOURSE IN THE SMALL PROSE OF THE INTERWAR PERIOD IN THE 1920ies

Abstract
The present article deals with the prose of Ukrainian and Russian exile literature during the twenty-years of the interwar period on the example of works of O. Gritsaj («On the Sultan and his wife», «On the Emerald Oasis», «Slave») and A. Kuprin («Blue Star», «Magical Carpet», «Destiny»). Particular attention to the East in the writers’ creative work is explained by objective laws of the literary process in the context of philosophical quests of the era. Short stories and legends of Kuprin and Gritsaj display multiple similar traits due to their strong influence by the East, these traits are being identified in the present article. For this purpose similar themes and motifs in the works of Kuprin and Gritsaj have been analyzed and the originality of the creative work of the writers has been highlighted. The conclusions are based on a comparative analysis and Oriental themes of Kuprin and Gritsaj. The short fiction works were written in the original form. These are legends and fantastic stories with philosophical content and exotic background. The authors raised the same topics (freedom, power, love, aim), have used similar motifs (road, beauty), problematical topics (freedom and slavery, parents and children), language tools. This article is the first to compare creative work of Kuprin and Gritsaj from the perspective of Oriental themes. The research results can be used by students and researchers for studying Comparative Literature, Ukrainian and Russian literature. Oriental directing of the short fiction of A. Kuprin and A. Gritsaj is characterized by a peculiar vividness, saturation with vivid scenes, exotic, particular way of thinking that enables us to affirm an important contribution of writers to the cultural space of the world literature.
