Journal Title: Postępy Nauk Medycznych - Year 2011, Vol 24, Issue 9

Abstract

Introduction. Gastroesophageal reflux disease is one of the most common gastrointestinal disorders. GERD is a condition which develops when the reflux of gastric contents cause troublesome symptoms with/or without erosive esophagitis. The increase of GERD incidence in the world is likely associated with the increased prevalence of obesity.Aim. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between overweight/obesity and GERD symptoms and lifestyle related factors.Materials and methods. From 2006 to 2010, 183 subjects were enrolled (98 in GERD group and 85 in control group). The participants were asked to complete the questionnaire consisted questions about patient’s demographics, height, weight, waist circumference, reflux related symptoms and their frequency, and lifestyle (in particular physical activity, smoking and risk of stress).Results. The average BMI was statistically higher in GERD group than in control group (p = 0.008). There was no positive correlation between waist circumference and GERD (OR, 1.42; 95% Cl 0.96-2.09). It was found that risk factors for GERD are: elder age (OR, 1.03; 95% Cl, 1.00-1.05), risk of stress in workplace and behind it (respectively OR, 2.07; 95% Cl, 0.99-4.36 and OR, 1.77; 95% Cl 1.21-2.60) and prolonged smoking in the past (OR 4.44; 95% CI 1.37-14.35). It was also found that high physical activity in leisure time may play protective role in GERD (OR 0.63; 95% CI, 0.41-0.97).Conclusions. There is positive correlation between overweight/obesity and GERD. Elder age (over fourties), risk of stress in workplace and behind it and prolonged smoking in the past are risk factors for GERD. It seems that high physical activity in leisure time acts an protective role in GERD.
