PARAVERBAL MEANS EXPRESSING POSITIVE EVALUATION IN ENGLISH FILM DISCOURSE

Abstract
The purpose of the article is to analyse non-verbal means of emphasizing positive evaluation in approval speech act in English fi lm discourse. The object of this study is English fi lm discourse. The subjects of this study are non-verbal means of emphasizing positive evaluation. Methods of linguistic description, contextual-interpretational and functional-semantic methods are used in this linguistic research. Identifying the tendency that the kinetic means, used by the actors expressing approval, depend on its degree of sincerity and expressiveness, presupposed by the plot, a character’s image and the fi lm maker’s demands is the fi nding of research. The results of the research show that paraverbal means serve to diff erentiate sincere approving utterances that are characterized by high degree of emotiveness, but a diff erent degree of xpressiveness; insincere approving utterances serving to hide the speaker’s fear, to encourage or soothe the interlocutor; ironical approving utterances; formal or ritual approving utterances. The research has also shown that approval can be communically realized by means of paraverbal devices only, without any verbal components. The practical value of the research is a possibility to use the theoretical points of the carried out research during the lectures and seminars devoted to the problems of non-verbal semiotics.
