Parosteal ossifying lipoma of scapula - A rare case report

Abstract
Parosteal lipoma (ones having contiguity with the periosteum) is a rare subtype of lipoma. The Ossifying lipoma (with osseous element) is also rare entity. We present a case of Parosteal Ossifying lipoma at scapula, which is to the best of our knowledge, second case at this site reported from Indian subcontinent. An otherwise healthy 60 years female presented with swelling over back. Due to its variable consistency, suspicion of malignant transformation arising in a lipoma arose clinically. The CT scan showed a lipomatous lesion with diffuse ossification. Intraoperatively it was found to be adherent to the periosteum of right scapula. Histopathology revealed Parosteal Ossifying lipoma without evidence of malignancy. Thus, this rare, benign soft tissue tumor - Parosteal Ossifying lipoma should be kept as differential diagnosis of a lesion having variable consistency adjacent to bones, along with malignancy.
