Photolysis of Metribuzin in Water under Direct Sunlight - Identification of Photo-transformation Products by LC-MS-MS Electrospray Tandem Mass Spectrometry and Impact on Aquatic Species (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata)

Abstract

Photolysis of a systemic herbicide metribuzin was studied in Milli-Q water and in three different aqueous buffer solutions of pH 5.0, 7.0 and pH 9.0. A commercial formulation of the herbicide having the active strength 14% EC w/w was spiked and exposed under direct sunlight in three different aqueous buffer solutions at 1.0 μg mL-1 and 2.0 μg mL-1 levels. Aliquots of water samples were collected in predetermined intervals and analysed by a validated High Performance Liquid Chromatography with Ultra Violet detector (HPLC-UV) at a wave length of 230 nm. The method showed recovery 90 + 5% recovery in aqueous buffer solutions. The method has limit of quantification (LOQ) 0.01 μg mL-1. The DT50 and DT90 values were calculated from the dissipation data. The reaction was faster in basic water. The dissipation of metribuzin in water followed first order kinetics. The major photo transformation products in water were identified by liquid chromatography electrospray tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS). The impact of residues on the growth of green alga was also studied using Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata.
