PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IN PRESCHOOL CHILDREN FROM POZNAŃ
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2008, Vol 24, Issue 5
Abstract
Background. The aim of this study was to assess physical activity in preschool children from Poznan, taking into account their ordinary and additional physical activity, their motor skills, involvement of family members and other persons in teaching the children motor skills, owning sports equipment and parents' attitude towards their children's physical activity.Material and methods. Questionnaires on physical activity in 165 children, including 76 girls and 89 boys, aged 5 to 7 years from seven preschools in Poznan were filled in by their parents. The influence of children's gender was analysed.Results. Children's gender had statistically significant influence on time spent in front of a computer, riding a bicycle, three types of motor skills (i. e. in-line skating, riding a bicycle and skipping a rope), involvement of family members and other persons in teaching the children skiing, as well as owning skates, in-line skates and skipping rope. Five correlation coefficients were statistically significant: between owning skates, skis, in-line skates, bicycle and skipping rope, and motor skills which require using this equipment.Conclusions. This is the first study in which girls were found to be more physically active than boys. Preschool girls' parents paid more attention to their daughters' motor development and were more interested in broadening their own knowledge of the role of physical activity in preschool child's development in comparison to preschool boys' parents.
