Physical activity in the population of circulatory diseases early prevention programme participants

Abstract
[b]Background.[/b] According to the World Health Organization, inactive lifestyle is the major cause of disability all over the world. Physical activity influences hypertension, hyperlipidemia and obesity. In Poland, only 10% of adults lead an active lifestyle. The aim of this paper was to assess the preva­lence of physical activity amongst Zgierz citizens aged 35-55 years, who participated in the Car­diovascular Prophylactic Programme.[b]Material and methods[/b]. The study was conducted amongst participants of the Cardiovascular Prophylactic Programme. It was carried out from February till April 2008. The study sample comprised 124 people. The instrument of the study was a questionnaire survey containing a block of questions concerning physical activity. The questionnaire survey was combined with blood pressure mea­surement and the result of diagnostic investigation that was executed among all patients. Hyper­tension was diagnosed when systolic blood pressure was equal to or higher than 140 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure was equal to or higher than 90 mmHg. Diabetes was assessed by the level of glucose higher than 126 mg/dl. Obesity was defined with Body Mass Index higher than 30 kg/m2.[b]Results.[/b] 38.7% of participants of the Cardiovascular Prophylactic Programme declared that they did not exercise at all. The most inactive were people aged 50-55. Low physical activity was con­nected with hypertension, high total cholesterol level and obesity.[b]Conclusions.[/b] The results of the conducted study confirm that there is a strong need to im­ple­ment educational programmes among local communities, aiming at popularisation of healthy and active lifestyle
