Physico-chemical characterization of the ripe fruit in three mutants by FHIA-21 (Musa AAAB)

Journal Title: Biotecnología Vegetal - Year 2009, Vol 9, Issue 4

Abstract

Morphoagronomic evaluations of mutants obtained through the Programs of in vitro mutagenesis are essential for the incorporation of new varieties to bananas production. The present study enabled to evaluate several physical and chemical characteristics of matured fruits from three mutants (IBP 14-23, IBP 17-13 and IBP 24-14) of low height. These were derived from banana hybrid FHIA-21 (AAAB) obtained by in vitro mutagenesis. Characteristics of the fruit such as: weight, length and diameter, as well as the fresh mass of the pulp and peel, were evaluated. Pulp and peel colour, total soluble solids content and pH were determined. As results, mutant IBP 14-23 produced fingers with higher weight. These were smaller but with superior diameter and weight of pulp. Changes in the pulp colour in mutant IBP 17-13 from orange yellow to darker orange were observed. The evaluations of total soluble solids content showed differences between mutants IBP 24-14 and IBP 17-13 with respect to the control. Values of pH tended to be acid in all the cases.
