POLISH CULTURAL ADAPTATION OF SHOULDER ASSESSMENT SCORES FOR SHOULDER INSTABILITY: WOSI, OXFORD SHOULDER INSTABILITY SCORE, WALCH-DUPLAY (PART II). PRELIMINARY STUDY

Abstract
Introduction The instability of the shoulder is a specific disease, in which the main symptom is patients’ apprehension against dislocation of the shoulder. The shoulder pain like it is in other disorders in this region is much less common. In everyday practice, an orthopaedic surgeon and physiotherapist often use self-assessment surveys dedicated for shoulder instability such as: Western Ontario Shoulder Instability Index, Oxford Shoulder Instability Score, and Walch-Duplay Score for Instability of the Shoulder. None of these forms has yet been translated into Polish and culturally adapted to the Polish habits. Aim The aim of this work is to perform the Polish cultural adaptation of selected questionnaires. This study will be followed by thorough validation. Materials and methods The process of adaptation to Polish culture was carried out according to international guidelines. Adaptation included translating original of each form from English into Polish, then reverse-translation into English, and finally initial testing of created version on a group of 33 people. The final version of each of the surveys has been approved by the committee supervising the process of cultural adaptation. Results There have been very few inaccuracies in the linguistic word procession during the translation of all three questionnaires and in the meaning of certain words in the original version, which had no equivalent in Polish. The committee established ultimate form of expressions that has been used in the final version of the surveys. Testing of the questionnaires proceeded without objections. Conclusions Presented paper is a preliminary report. The process of cultural adaptation to the Polish culture of selected assessment forms for shoulder instability has been completed successfully. Currently, the second part of the project is underway and consists of validation of the above-mentioned forms in clinical settings.
