PRACTICAL IMPLEMENTATION OF FOOD PYRAMID RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ATHLETES BASED ON THE ANALYSIS OF FOOD PREFERENCES OF ATHLETES PRACTICING TEAM GAMES
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2012, Vol 28, Issue 4
Abstract
The aim of this study was to develop a ten-day menu, compliant with the food pyramid for athletes and taking into account the products and dishes preferred by professional players practicing team games.A survey was performed among 100 players (± 25 years) practicing volleyball, basketball or soccer on an advanced training probation and high sport level. The research was based on food preferences questionnaire containing the names of 186 food products and dishes. Food preferences were evaluated from a 5-degree hedonic scale.Based on the questionnaires, the items recognized by respondents as disliked were excluded from the menu and the menu was focused on the preferred foods. The results were used to develop a ten-day menu with an average energy value of about 3200 kcal. It contains cereal products of low grist, dishes with vegetables and potatoes, and also fruits and vegetables (adequately at least three and two times a day). Compensation of body fluid loss was planned by consumption of three servings of milk or dairy products with reduced fat, one serving of meat, fish or eggs and fats (ex. oil or olive) every day. The diet also includes small amounts of sweets.Preparing the ten-day menu compliant with the food pyramid for athletes and taking into account their food preferences is demanding, e.g. taking into account planning the three dairy products servings or limiting meat and fish intake to one serving a day. A suggested diet for athletes, consistent with international dietary guidelines, regarding application value, can be considered as an exemplary nutritional strategy for athletes practicing team games.
