PRAGMATIC APPROACH TO TEACHING THE DISCIPLINES «SAFETY OF LIFE ACTIVITY» AND «BASICS OF LABOUR PROTECTION» IN THE CLASSICAL UNIVERSITY

Abstract

The ever-increasing level of different hazards in the world and in Ukraine, the risks in everyday life and in the workplace requires a new orientation of the higher education system and curriculum reformation on students’ activity regarding issues on life safety. It is shown, that we need a new vision of the educational material, the modernization of the forms and methods of its submission rather than the elimination of safety-targeted disciplines to improve students' understanding of the importance, relevance and demand for safe life. It seems necessary to proceed from the provisions of pragmatism which regulates the organization of work on the basis of the principle «to teach by doing». «Pragmatism» as a doctrine, a philosophical trend has been studied by scientists representing different eras: to explain educational paradigms, concepts and innovations; use the ideas of pragmatism in educational institutions of different levels. The classical universities and pragmatism in teaching the disciplines «Safety life activity» and «Basics of labour protection» remained outside the field of view of researchers. The aim of the article is to analyze the role of pragmatism in the educational process of classical universities and the possibility of its implementation into the teaching process of these disciplines. The concept «pragmatism» has been examined; the effectiveness of the introduction of the ideas of pragmatism into disciplines specialized in safety issues has been analyzed. To form the culture of safe life activity while teaching the disciplines «Safety life activity» and «Basics of labour protection» we applied the basic principles of pragmatism. The contents of the disciplines on «Safety life activity» and «Basics of labour protection» presupposed the solution of the issues on «overcoming traditional attitudes», such as the elimination of information overload which is not a foundation for new knowledge, and the role of students’ independent individual work as well as the work under a teachers’ supervision, in the classroom and within extracurricular time. It is emphasized that students should be guided rather by pragmatic intentions to use their educational experience in everyday life rather than by an abstract goal to increase their educational level. While conducting the study, we followed the model of the educational process focused on students’ personal development; the main features of this model have been specified. The author asserts that the pragmatic orientation of the contents and students’ learning activities while studying the disciplines «Safety life activity» and «Basics of labour protection» may be a pedagogical condition which facilitatates students’ training aimed at the formation of the culture of safe life activity. The designated safety-orientation of the training process allows students to actively assimilate, corroborate, sustain and validate the acquired knowledge and skills.
