PRAGMATIC ECHO QUESTIONS AS A COMMUNICATIVE LINGUISTIC UNIT

Abstract

Such communicative language unit as echo questions are analyzed in the article. Echo questions are a linguistic phenomenon, which is used in the dialogue speech with the pragmatic intention. Pragmatic rehearsals, which are often encountered in communication, are an effective means of expression of courtesy and diplomacy. This is especially true for interrogation-fillers of communicative pauses and recipe-clarifiers. In the event that one of the speakers puts an incorrect question, his interlocutor, in order not to respond in a rude form or not to respond at all (in this case, the contact between the interlocutors will be interrupted), may apply a pragmatic reciprocal, which enables to continue the conversation and maintain a friendly the atmosphere in the process of communication. Pragmatic reciprocation is a widespread language phenomenon in communication and is an effective pragmatic means of expression of courtesy and diplomacy. If the speaker does not like the question of the interlocutor, instead of answering this question, a pragmatic interrogation is used, which allows the same not to interrupt the conversation, but to continue if the speaker wants it.
