PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS’ KNOWLEDGE LEVELS ON “ABBREVIATIONS”

Abstract

In this study, it is aims to determine pre-service teachers’ knowledge level on abbreviations. Research sampling consists of 436 pre-service teachers from Science Teaching, Mathematics Teaching, School Teaching, Social Studies Teaching and Turkish Language Teaching Programs of Faculty of Education at Bartın University in fall semester of 2016-2017 academic year. The study is designed in descriptive analysis model. The data were collected from “Current List of Abbreviations” including fifty words/phrases formed by the researcher in accordance with expert views. The data were analyzed according to programs and grades of pre-service teachers based on their answers; the abbreviations which the participants most and least familiar with, are tabulated and related frequency and percentage values were presented. According to the research findings, it was found that familiarity level of abbreviations by pre-service teachers is low; mean values are close to each other according to grades and programs; pre-service teachers find it hard to recognize particularly the abbreviations including single letters.
