Journal Title: Przegląd Wschodni - Year 2018, Vol 14, Issue 56
Abstract
The 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, and the rebirth of the Polish state associated with it, reminds us of the figure of Józef Piłsudski, the creator of the Polish armed action and the greatest bannerman for regaining the independence of Poland. As a result of the agreement between the Supreme Directorate of State Archives and the Central Archives of Historical Records in Warsaw alongside the Polish Academy of Sciences – Scientific Centre in Vienna, a draft from a source publication devoted to Piłsudski’s activity between 1914-1918 was gathered from archives in the Austrian State Archives in Vienna. In the publication, which was divided into two volumes (the first includes archives from the War Archive, the second from the General Archives of Administration and from the Archives of the House, Court and State), can also be found documents related to eastern issues. Documents (17) from 1916–1918 published in the article address such issues as the crisis in the Polish Legions of Baranavichy caused by Pitsudski’s dismissal and the agitation of his supporters; the arrival of a Russian emissary in Austria with the task of obtaining Piłsudski for Russia and the removal of the Polish Legions from the central states; the influence of the Russian revolution and the manifesto of the Provisional Government in Russia on political parties in the Kingdom of Poland; Piłsudski’s statement that under the new conditions Poland cannot wage war with Russia; a dispute involving Piłsudski for the publication of the entire text of the declaration of the Russian Provisional Government and Piłsudski’s thesis that the text of the proclamation sent to the Council of State was falsified by the central powers; press information about Pilsudski’s nomination as the honorary chairman of the Congress in Russia and allegedly the commander-in-chief of the nascent Polish army; arrest of the Commander and the subseq uent reactions of Polish society and various political groups, including demonstrations in Lwów; the activity of the Polish Military Organization in Russia; the political situation in Galicia on March 18, 1918 in connection with the celebrations of the name-day of Józef Piłsudski.
