Journal Title: Вісник Житомирського державного університету імені Івана Франка - Year 2017, Vol 90, Issue 4
Abstract
The article illustrates the important place of women’s organizations in the cultural and educational progress of the Ukrainian diaspora on the American continent. The research literature and publications in the press of the early twentieth century were analyzed; the festive publications of Ukrainian public organizations of the interwar period and science-based literature were studied and showed the results of women's activities within associations in Canada and the United States. Chronological, theoretical analysis of detected materials, comparison and generalization of data were used as methods of the research to the article. The peculiarities of formation and development of the first Ukrainian women's organizations in the USA and Canada are revealed. The article highlights the role in preserving national identity, moral welfare, finance support of Ukrainian girls, their professional orientation and "entry" into foreign-cultural space. It was found that the activities of women in the United States on the American continent were marked by the ascending nature of development, the desire to counteract the denationalizing effects on children and young people, as a result of the formation of a religious and public cultural and educational life of Ukrainian emigration in close co-operation with the women's movement in their native lands. At the same time, new conditions of life forced women's societies to focus on the problems of adapting the younger generation to social norms, ways of managing and traditions of the "free world". As a result, women’s work occupied a prominent place to prepare girls for new forms of professional activities that a Ukrainian woman carried out from mainland Ukraine (household maintenance, folk crafts, handicraft, childcare, education), and dictated by the economic and social -cultural situation in the places of new residence of Ukrainian-immigrants (foreign language courses are the most demanded in the USA and Canada for educational establishments and institutes for mastering "foreign" knowledge as a basis of obtaining higher education, second higher education and learning skills of socio-political activities, rules of coexistence in a multicultural environment, etc.).
