Psychosocial background of single mothers by choice at UNEMI
Journal Title: Más Vita - Year 2024, Vol 6, Issue 4
Abstract
Introduction: This article examines the psychosocial background of single mothers by choice at the Universidad Estatal de Milagro (UNEMI), exploring how these women construct their maternal identity through family support and the economic and personal independence they find in their academic environment. Objective:Analyze the reasons and experiences of these women, as well as the challenges and benefits of assuming single motherhood.Materials and methods:A quantitative methodology was used with a sample of 1,357 women, including students and faculty from various departments, along with a questionnaire on the emotional state of single mothers, complemented by correlation analysis and the Kappa coefficientto ensure validity. Results:The main results indicate that the most common reason for choosing single motherhood is the desire to fulfill the maternal role, followed by the pursuit of autonomy and the avoidance of conflicting relationships. Participants highlight advantages such as freedom in decision-making and control over their family project, although they also face consequences like social rejection and a significant responsibility burden due to the absence of a partner. Conclusions:Among the main conclusions, the importance of family support and the need for support networks to ease the emotional and social weight of this choice stand out. Finally, it is recommended to strengthen psychological and social support programs, implement inclusive and awareness-raising policies at the university, and foster support networks that promote a favorable environment for single motherhood. This study contributes to understanding single motherhood by choice in an academic context, highlighting howwomen build their life projects autonomously and according to their own values
