Journal Title: The Odisha Journal of Psychiatry - Year 2018, Vol 26, Issue 1

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: HIV/AIDS (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) (Acquired immune deficiency syndrome) is an incurable and debilitating condition which has a significant impact on the quality of life of the afflicted individuals in the symptomatic stages, even if they are on HAART (Highly active anti retro viral therapy). However, there are few studies evaluating the quality of life in asymptomatic, HAART naïve individuals in a tertiary hospital set up in South India. Hence the objective of this study is to evaluate quality of life in HIV seropositive individuals and compare them to HIV seronegative controls MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a cross sectional, case control study. The study sample consisted of 30 HIV seropositive cases and 30 HIV seronegative controls , referred to the Voluntary Counseling and testing centers (VCTC) of a tertiary care hospital. Due informed consent and Institutional ethical clearance was obtained for the study. Quality of life was assessed using Short Form-36(SF 36) health survey. Data was statistically analyzed. RESULTS: HIV seropositive individuals scored significantly less than HIV seronegative individuals on physical and mental components of SF-36 with certain domains being more affected than others. CONCLUSION: HIV seropositive individuals have a poorer quality of life as compared to HIV seronegative individuals in a tertiary care hospital set up in South India
