Response of Phaseolus vulgaris L. lines in late sowing

Journal Title: Biotecnología Vegetal - Year 2018, Vol 18, Issue 2

Abstract

Knowing the response of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) to the environmental factors present in the different sowing seasons has been recognized as an important criterion in the genetic improvement for tolerance to drought stress. The objective of this study was to determine the response of P. vulgaris lines in the late sowing season. Seeds of 12 lines obtained by selecting the cultivar ‘BAT-93’ were used. Besides, seeds of the commercial cultivar ‘BAT 93’ were used as control. The percentage of emergence was calculated 7 and 14 days after sowing. At the harvest, the number of legumes per plant and the number of seeds per plant were quantified. In addition, morphological characters such as the shape of the legume and the color of the seeds were evaluated. The lines presented emergency percentages higher than 90%. The number of legumes per plant varied between three and nine. The response regarding the number of seeds per plant was not in correspondence with that obtained for the number of legumes per plant in all the lines. The lines that presented the best response during the late sowing season were IBP-9 and IBP-19. These differed in the degree of curvature of the legumes and in the color of the seed. These are promising lines to be used in late sowing season.
