RESTORATION OF THE COLLECTION OF THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF KHARKIV UNIVERSITY IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE 1940s–1950s

Abstract

One of the best archaeological collections of the country, which was kept in the Archaeological Museum of Kharkiv University, was almost completely destroyed during the Second World War. Immediately after the ending of war the archaeologists of Kharkiv University began its recovery. In 1945 S. Semenov-Zuser had excavated mounds of Scythian period near Lyubotin. In the 1946–1948 he studied Saltov early medieval catacomb burial ground and settlements near the village Verhniy Saltov. In 1949 S. Semenov-Zuser conducted excavations of burial mounds and hill-forts of Scythian period near the village Velyka Homolsha. Small in size, but very important from a scientific point of view the excavations were carried out in the 1954–1956 by K. Hrynevych on the territory of the ancient city of Olbia. From 1949 to 1959 B. Shramko conducted extensive explorations and excavations in Kharkiv region. During this time, scientist had discovered several dozen different archaeological sites from the Neolithic period to the Middle Ages. The most prominent were the excavations of famous Donetsk hill-fort (chronicle Donets). In the second half of the 50's of the XXth century the collection of the Archaeological Museum of Kharkiv University was replenished by V. Kadyeyev, B. Zaitsev and V. Mikheyev. The best exhibits of the collection of the Archaeological Museum of Kharkiv University were presented at the exhibition in 1958. After 15 post-war field seasons the museum has received about 23 thousand artifacts.
