ROLE OF LATIN IN FUTURE PHILOLOGISTS’ TRAINING

Abstract
The article is devoted to the role of Latin in future philologists’ training. The relevance of the article deals with the transformation of the content of future philologists’ training in the context of globalization processes and the dynamic development of science and technology. The outcome of this is the growing public demand for competent translators who can translate in various sectors of the economy, taking into account industry terminology. The purpose of this article is to figure out the place of Latin in the education process of future philologists’ training at higher educational establishments and the content of this subject. Materials and methods of research. Methods of analysis, comparison, generalization and descriptions were used to solve the issues of the article. Results of research. The meaning of Latin for future interpreters and translators can hardly be overestimated. On one hand, Latin contributes to the development of grammatical understanding, while reading Latin texts enriches vocabulary and encourages for variety in lexis in communication in mother tongue and foreign languages, usage of aphoristic expressions and general creativity. On the other hand basic knowledge of Latin is very useful for translating scientific and technological literature as the terminology of many sciences like natural sciences was formed on the Latin background. Interesting fact, besides countless Latin dramas, epic compositions and poems there were also novels, and because they described mostly current events the vocabulary was constantly extended. However, the development of vocabulary in the science field was even more rapid. and productive. The scientists of that epoch wrote their scientific papers to gain international recognition in Latin or translated them into Latin. Latin is mostly studied in lyceums and primary and secondary schools in European countries. For instance almost the third of all senior school students in Austria and Germany study Latin as the first, second or third foreign language. Latin is an optional course in middle school in Switzerland. Latin is also studied at numerous European universities, usually within the course of the classic philology. Future interpreters that study Latin should focus especially on Latin use in the scientific field. In biology scientific terms were created in Latin and Greek languages. Most anatomical terms are Latin, however organs are named through Latinized Greek words. The jurisprudence field uses many Latin principles and technical terms. Latin still has a huge part in history. Latin terms are used in many classifications in meteorology. Latin is widely used in pharmacology, pharmacists and doctors use Latin for writing prescriptions and abbreviations. International astronomic union divided the celestial regions into 88 constellations, all of them are titled in Latin along with three-lettered abbreviation. Separate stars in constellations are marked by Greek or Latin letters or digits and then by Latin genitive name of the constellation. The nomenclature of geological formations on other celestial body is usually labelled in Latin. Analyzing scientific terminology we should focus future interpreters on borrowings from Latin. The Ukrainian language also has a huge amount of borrowings from Latin. In the agrarian field, for example: аграрний, віварій, вірус, конопля, культура, перець, терарій (agrarian, vivarium, virus, hemp, culture, pepper, terrariums etc.). So, there is no doubt that necessity of basic knowledge of Latin (grammar, vocabulary, linguistic history, etymological influence) is pivotal for successful career of any interpreter. The understanding of foreign words and phrases, especially earlier etymological layers in common language and educationally-scientific terminology is a crucial part of cultural and scientific knowledge. Conclusions and prospects. Based on the study, it was determined that after studying the Latin language course, students make less grammatical errors in foreign texts, in particular, related to the construction of complex sentences and word order, and also achieve better results in identifying errors and correcting them. It is also advisable, when studying Latin, to make a comparison with one of the modern European languages – first of all, the one that future translators study as the first foreign language.
