Roll of cover crops in enhance ecological services
Journal Title: International Journal of Farming and Allied Sciences - Year 2013, Vol 2, Issue 23
Abstract
Arid and semi-arid regions are characterized by water scarcity, hot dry weather and large area of poor soils. Cover crops could be considered the backbone of any annual cropping system that seeks to be sustainable. In this publication we summarize the principal uses and benefits of cover crops. Brief descriptions and examples are provided for winter cover crops, living mulches, catch crops, and some forage crops. To impart a sense of the importance of these practices in sustainable farming, we summarize the effect of cover crops on: organic matter and soil structure, nitrogen production, soil microbial activity, nutrient enhancement, weed suppression, and soil and water conservation. The very nature of cover crop benefits, as well as the fact that they have both short-term and long-term effects, means that it is often difficult to assign a monetary value to them. Ultimately, the insertion of cover crops into a crop rotation should increase the overall sustainability of the farm.

Simulation of wheat yield by AquaCrop model
Crops growth simulation models are important tools for evaluating effects of water deficiency on productivity and yield of crops. One of these models is the AquaCrop model. This model can simulate productivity, yield,...
Effect of 2,4-D and 2ip hormones on embryogenesis callus production and the effect of sucrose and concentrations of MS salts on somatic embryogenesis of date palm (cv. Medjool)
Somatic embryogenesis is one of the most common and effectual method for in vitro regeneration of date palms. In this study, production of embryogenesis callus in Medjool cultivar on high concentrations of 2,4-D (10, 3...
Effects of plant density and nitrogen levels on yield and yield components in corn
In the present research the effects of different levels of nitrogen fertilizer and plant density on yield and yield components in corn in field conditions was under investigation.A factorial experiment was conducted in...
Study on tolerance to terminal drought stress of bread wheat genotype using indices for susceptibility and tolerance to stress
In order to study the response of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) to drought stress, two experiments were conducted in Research Station of Islamic Azad University, Ardabil Branch, in 2007-08 and 2008-09 cropping yea...
Comparison of population growth parameters of the Plodia interpunctella Hübner (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) on Zahedi, Shahabi and Kabkab cultivars of date
The Indian meal moth, Plodia interpunctella (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) is one of the most commonly reported pests of stored date in Iran. The population growth parameters of P. interpunctella were studied on thr...
