S0ME REFLECTIONS OF ‘SNAKE WOMAN’ MYTH IN GERMAN AND TURKISH LITERATURE

Abstract

The ''Sea Creatures'' of human-beast mixture as a concept, which are the Fairies, Witches, Sirens, Swan Princesses, Snake Women, undergoing metamorphesis, have turned out to be under the name of Melusine, Loreley and Şahmaran have become the in evitable specific motives of Literature. The aim of this study is to find out there flection of half snake half human myth in the German and Turkish Literature, and to see through the selected works of which periodical cultural functions have affected the interpretation of snake-human motives, and those which have been expressed and implied with out saying any thing and to compare and contrast them through eclectic method/approach. Taking this into consideration in this study, the indirect expressions to Melusine myth in some works of T. Fontane and the direct adaptations in Otter of B. Frischuth and in some selected Turkish Literature, such as Şahmaran description and the snake woman motifs in Şahmaran of Zülfü Livaneli, under the light of cultural understanding, the continuity of human-dominated society and its means of purification has been determined.
