Abstract

Self-reliance of Children at Preschool Age Self-reliance is a feature which develops with age and whose scope expands alongside. It is, at the same time, a developmental need of each person, manifesting itself in a child’s steady effort to take action individual that is independent of the environment. Meanwhile, adults often limit the child in its experiencing different situations, through relieving it of performing actions or taking it off completing them. Reasons for such behaviors vary: overprotection and excessive care, anxiety about the child, being in a hurry, which does not allow waiting for the child to bring the commenced action to the end. Wise rearing means resignation from relieving children, imposing requirements adjusted to the child’s potential. Responsible bringing up means making it possible for the child to be self-reliant and independent, both in carrying out practical action and moving within social and mental spheres. Obviously, it is worth supporting child’s self-reliance, since it contributes considerably to developing readiness for beginning school education and better preparation to perform the role of a pupil. Regarding the future, it also allows the child to more efficiently cope with different, often very complex situations of life. In the present paper, the author considers the subject of development of self-reliance of contemporary children at preschool age. The reflection over the problem area will be enriched with an assessment of the problem made by preschool teachers employed in kindergartens in Opole region. The analyses will be based on the survey research which was conducted among them. The author will undertake to verify her own observations and reflections, which point to the conclusion that contemporary children represent a rather low level of self-reliance.
