Journal Title: Гірська школа Українських Карпат - Year 2017, Vol 0, Issue 17

Abstract

The paper highlights the historical role of the Ukrainian intellectuals in the development of education, science, culture, socio-political, social and economic life of Ukraine. The attention is paid to the educational activities of the pedagogical intellectuals among the broad segments of the adult population. In the context of historical analysis, teaching is presented as a form of social service for its nation. It focuses on the synonymous understanding of such concepts as «teacher» and «science communicator», which in broad sense meant: propagandist of progressive ideas, knowledge, and culture; and in the narrow one it was the distribution of illiterate literacy among the population provided for the ability to read, perceive and understand the necessary amount of socio-cultural information. It is noted that there are many names of educators in Ukrainian history who initiated the opening of educational institutions for adults in villages and cities, introduced effective organizational forms, worked on the development and improvement of their content and teaching and methodological support. The author proves that the cohort of Ukrainian educators includes the advanced Ukrainian intellectuals representatives of Bukovina at the end of the ХІХth and the beginning of the ХХth century who, in the context of a multinational and multi-religious social environment, recognize an important factor in educating adults in helping people to adapt in changing social circumstances and consider it as a means of forming a national consciousness and preparation for gaining and improving the state independence. Based on a retrospective historical and pedagogical analysis, the activities of the Ukrainian intellectuals of Bukovina, which meets the criteria for the activity of the andragog i.e. a specialist in the adults education, were highlighted. It was established that the professional activity of teachers went beyond the education of the younger generation and the transferability of learning. For them, work in and out of school was a sense of life, a means of expressing life, the professional position and beliefs. On the basis of ideas and thoughts of the Bukovynian intellectuals, the author conditionally outlined the personality-professional model of the activity of the andragogy-teacher, which was to implement the teacher in interaction with the adult population by its own andragogical functions, that is educational, preaching; performing the role of counselor, mentor, consultant, stimulus (animator), science communicator, translator of knowledge and experience. It was stated that the andragogical activity of Bukovyna popular teachers at the end of the ХІХth and the beginning of the ХХth centuries contributed to the growth of the socio-cultural level and the rise of the national consciousness of the region population and the improvement of its welfare.
