SOIL BURIALS OF THE KYIV RUS PERIOD IN THE BASIN OF HORYN RIVER
Journal Title: Матеріали і дослідження з археології Прикарпаття і Волині - Year 2018, Vol 22, Issue
Abstract
The article analyzes more than 80 soil burials of the Kyiv Rus period found in the Basin of Horyn River. Most of them (65%) were explored in urban and rural burial grounds during the last 25 years. There are two types of the settlement and burial ground mutual location: 1) the settlement was located along the bank of the river and the burial ground was outside the settlement; 2) the burial ground was located within the settlement. In Peresopnytsia, the exploration has found ditches, which separated burial grounds from the settlement. Most soil graves were dug to the mainland level and their contours are difficult to define. In some cases, we managed to define that the graves had rectangular or oval shape. The bodies of the buried people lay stretched on the back, arms were folded in elbows and hands were placed on the bones of the pelvis, on the vertebrae or on the chest. In most burials, the head of the buried person is west- or south-west oriented (87,3%). These elements of the burial ritual indicate the canon of Christianity. In 19 graves, we have found things, among them there is earthen ware, tools, house hold things, parts of clothes, decorations, and objects of Christian worship. The analysis of the elements of the burial ritual leads to the conclusion that within the territory of Volyn elevation the custom of burying in the grave according to the Christian canon became widespread in the 12th century.
