Solar protection and the risk of melanoma in the sporting population.
Journal Title: Archives of Nursing Research - Year 2017, Vol 1, Issue 1
Abstract
Abstract: An excess of ultraviolet radiation can have harmful effects on the skin. This can also be increased by diverse risk factors such as one’s exposition to sunlight, skin type and a history of skin lesions. Objective: To discover the existence of dermatological problems caused by prolonged exposure to sunlight, as well as the degree of awareness of the harmful effects of inadequate solar protection in the population dedicated to practicing sports in the open air. Methodology: A questionnaire on habits concerning exposure to sunlight has been used, aimed at three sports clubs in the city of Plasencia. The different study variables have been analyzed using the SPSS computer program to look for statistical significance. Results: The studied population showed an almost generalized use of some kind of solar protection (96.7%); however, their use was inadequate. The most alarming fact was that a high percentage of the participants did not reapply the sun cream every 2-3 hours (76%), so the protection would be eliminated through sweating and friction. Furthermore, 46% only used sun cream in the summer months. As for the degree of awareness, they showed positive attitudes, giving more importance to health than to beauty (67%). Conclusions: This study has shown that the practicing of sports increases the risk of developing skin lesions due to ultraviolet radiation. This is due to prolonged, repeated exposure to sunlight and insufficient solar protection. It is necessary to promote new awareness raising campaigns in order to improve behavior concerning solar protection in the said group. The principal aim should be to promote self-exploration of the skin.
