SOME CHARACTERISTICS OF FINE STRUCTURE AND MICROSTRUCTURE OF BALTIC SEA WATERS
Journal Title: Biuletyn Instytutu Morskiego - Year 2001, Vol 28, Issue 2
Abstract
It is generolly agreed that fine structure and micrrutructure are usual~v beyond the resolution of numerical models. Nevertheless, con-esponding processes have a consideroble irifluence on water dynamics and exchanges in the Baltic Sea. Measurements of fine stntcture were earned out with the scanning CTD probe. Microstructure measurements were peiformed by towing a system with fast-response velocity, conductivity, and temperoture sensors. Bottom turbulence was investigated with the Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter. Domains of high mixing and stining activity were revealed by means of high-resolution profiling on temperoture and salinity transects. These domains were formd near inhomogeneities of bottom relief such as the Shtpsk Sill, the bottom elevation on eastern boundary of the Slupsk Furrow and in areas qf roy concentration of quasi-inertial internal waves. Data on transects with manifestations of convection provide an evidence of the non-uniform distribution ofturlmlence in the upper layer. A bottom turbulence patch with duration of about 2 hours was registered over the slope qf the Gotland Deep. The rate qf turbulent energy dissipation is about ](Js err?;; , In the area of Hamrame and Slupsk Sill, horizontal scales of turbulent patches are between O(JOm) and 0(1 00 m). All obtained data testifY d1e high level of turbulent intennittency, so probability of detecting htrbulent patches is high.

Validation of analytical method for determination of tributyltin (TBT) in soils and bottom sediments
Tributyltin (TBT) belongs to the group of persistent pollutants harming the marine environment. It is a danger to many aquatic organisms, especially those inhabiting seabed sediments. TBT was used mainly in production of...
HYDROCHEMICAL FLOOD FLOW OF THE VISTULA -AUGUST 2001
Intense rain in the south em part of the Vistula 's watershed in July 2001 resulted in floods in many places and in flood water flows on the Vistula and its tributanĀ·es. T7re culmination of the flood reached the Gulf of...
CHARACTERISTIC OF ENVIRONMENT DEGRADATION PROCESSES IN THE PUCK BAY AND MAIN DIRECTIONS OF ECOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONS AIMING AT RECULTIVATION OF THE BAY
During the last hundred years, the Baltic Sea environment and biocenoses have undergone a deep transformation, which resulted from a growing and cumulating influence of antropogenic factors. The Puck Bay - the western pa...
Application of a multibeam echosounder for the digital imaging of the bottom relief of seabeds and rivers
In this paper, the possibilities for detailed digital mapping the bottom relief of seabeds and rivers using a multibeam echosounder are described. The paper is based on the results of many years of experience, with...
Determination of petroleum compounds in bottom sediments
The following study was a theoretical base for selection, development and validation of the analytical procedure for the determination of petroleum hydrocarbons in bottom sediments to be used in a commercial researc...
