SOME CHARACTERISTICS OF FINE STRUCTURE AND MICROSTRUCTURE OF BALTIC SEA WATERS

Journal Title: Biuletyn Instytutu Morskiego - Year 2001, Vol 28, Issue 2

Abstract

It is generolly agreed that fine structure and micrrutructure are usual~v beyond the resolution of numerical models. Nevertheless, con-esponding processes have a consideroble irifluence on water dynamics and exchanges in the Baltic Sea. Measurements of fine stntcture were earned out with the scanning CTD probe. Microstructure measurements were peiformed by towing a system with fast-response velocity, conductivity, and temperoture sensors. Bottom turbulence was investigated with the Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter. Domains of high mixing and stining activity were revealed by means of high-resolution profiling on temperoture and salinity transects. These domains were formd near inhomogeneities of bottom relief such as the Shtpsk Sill, the bottom elevation on eastern boundary of the Slupsk Furrow and in areas qf roy concentration of quasi-inertial internal waves. Data on transects with manifestations of convection provide an evidence of the non-uniform distribution ofturlmlence in the upper layer. A bottom turbulence patch with duration of about 2 hours was registered over the slope qf the Gotland Deep. The rate qf turbulent energy dissipation is about ](Js err?;; , In the area of Hamrame and Slupsk Sill, horizontal scales of turbulent patches are between O(JOm) and 0(1 00 m). All obtained data testifY d1e high level of turbulent intennittency, so probability of detecting htrbulent patches is high.
