Study of association between FBS, HbA1c level and lipid profile in type 2 diabetes mellitus

Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2018, Vol 7, Issue 3

Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus is the most common metabolic disease. Glycated haemoglobin is used as marker for long term glycemic control and there is also significant variation between HbA1c levels and LDL, HDL levels. Present study is intended to know association between FBS, Hba1c level and lipid profile in type 2 diabetes mellitus.” Objectives: To study FBS and HbA1c levels of Diabetic patient with their HDL and LDL levels. Results: A total of 312 patients were studied. Mean age of the study population was 57.93 years (SD = 13.37). Peak incidence was between 50 -60 years, 91 (29.2%) followed by 40 -50 years. 75 (24%). There were 198 (63.5%) were males and 114 (36.5%) females. In the present study 124patients (39.7%) were having value > 126 mg/dl, 151 (48.4%) were having HbA1c value between 5% to 7%, 95 (30.4%) were having cholesterol > 200 mg/dl and 212 (67.9%) individuals were having HDL level <40 mg/dl. There were 138 (44.2%) patients having VLDL > 30 mg/dl and 217 (69.6%) were having LDL > 100 mg/dl. There was statistically significant positive correlation between Fasting blood glucose level and Total cholesterol (p =0.02) and between FBS and Triglyceride level (p=0.031). There was positive correlation between VLDL, LDL with FBS but the difference was not statistically significant. There was no statically significant difference between males and females in the present study. Conclusion: In the present study there was a positive correlation between FBS and HbA1c levels of Diabetic patients with their lipid profile. Dyslipidaemia can be used as a preventive measure for development of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
