Study of Resistances in Submerged Membrane Bioreactor: PART I – Membrane Fouling Phenomena for Residential Quarter Wastewater

Abstract

Membrane fouling studies for wastewaters originating from a residential colony has been carried out by laboratory-scale hollow fiber membrane bioreactor (MBR) for two different seasons. The two seasons considered was dry season i.e. summer season and another is wet season i.e. rainy season. The objective of present study is to elaborate the different resistances during membrane fouling phenomena. The membrane resistance for the present study was found to be 1 x 1012/m. Fouling resistance was found to vary from 0.80 x 1012/m to 1.25 x 1012/m. Cake resistance was found to vary from 1.7 x 1012/m to 3.05 x 1012/m. Total resistance was found to vary from 3.5 x 1012/m to 5.3 x 1012/m. The value of Fouling Resistance (RF), Cake resistance (RC) and Total resistance (RT) are decrease with increase in both hydraulic residence time (HRT) and Sludge residence time (SRT). Therefore, membrane fouling of the dead end hollow fiber submerged membrane bioreactor is decreased with increased in HRT and increased with SRT.
