Journal Title: Studia Salvatoriana Polonica - Year 2018, Vol 12, Issue

Abstract

Rev. Wawrzyniec (Lorenz) Hopfenmüller (1844-1890) as the editor of the newspaper „Bamberger Volksblatt” and socially involved priest was a known defender of the rights of the Church and of the faithful entrusted to him in the Bamberg archdiocese . After 21 years of priesthood he joined the Catholic Teaching Society founded by Fr. Francis Jordan. After novitiate, eternal monastic vows and a period when he was taking care of Oblates, he was appointed by the Founder as the first administrator of the apostolic prefecture of Assam, Bhutan and Manipur. From the moment of being sent to do the missionary work along with Rev. Angelus Münzloher and with two brothers: Joseph Bächle and Marianus Schumme on the 17th of January, 1890 until his death on the 21th of August of that same year, Rev. Otto Hopfenmüller laid long-lasting foundations for the fruitful missionary work in Assam. After 25 years of missionary activity of Salvatorians and Salvatorian Sisters at this apostolic prefecture the number of the faithful grew from 500 to 5 176 people.
