SYMBOLIC MEANING OF THE GRAIN IN THE CONTEXT OF RUSSIAN AND UKRAINIAN WEDDING CEREMONIES

Abstract
Such cereals as rye, oat and wheat were used by Ukrainians and Russians in the ceremonies of calendar and family cycles. The object of this article is the transformation of the symbolic meaning of the grain in the context of Ukrainian and Russian wedding ceremonies. The subject of the research is ambiguity of this symbol. Etymological origin of the Ukrainian and Russian words rye, oat, wheat was analysed by the author of the article. Polysemanticism of the symbolic meaning of the grain is described in the article in the context of Ukrainian and Russian wedding rituals. Grain as a syncretic symbol is presented in the rituals by means of several cereals: rye, oat, wheat. Symbolic actions with grain at different stages of wedding rituals, as well as grain as a verbal symbol in the texts of ritual songs and sayings are analyzed. Common features are highlighted in Ukrainian and Russian rituals where the symbolic meaning of the grain is visible. The differences in using the grain in ritual discourse of two Slavic nations are stressed.
