TEMPERAMENT IN MOTHERS AND THEIR CHILDREN WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISORDERS VERSUS A POSITIVE PERCEPTION OF PARENTAL EXPERIENCES

Journal Title: Educational Psychology - Year 2013, Vol 46, Issue 4

Abstract

Abstract: An approach focused on parental stress dominates in research on the psychological situation of parents of children with developmental disorders. There is significantly less information available on parents' positive experiences connected with taking care of their child even though such experiences may play an important part in adaptation processes. This study concerns the relationships between the temperament of mothers and their children with autism and Down syndrome and a positive perception of parental experiences. The EAS Temperament Survey (for adults and for children) and the Positive Contributions Scale of the Kansas Inventory of Parental Perceptions (KIPP) were used. Relationships between the mother’s and the child’s temperament and some dimensions of the mother’s positive parental perception were revealed. Also, significant differences in the child’s sociability as assessed by the mothers of children with autism and children with Down syndrome were revealed. Due to methodological limitations, the study should be treated as a pilot study that indicates directions for further analyses.
