THE ACTIVITY OF CITRI OIL (OL . CITRI) ON AEROBIC BACTERIA

Abstract
Citrus limon L. belongs to family Rutaceae. The essential oil from the Citri peel oil exhibited significant antimicrobial effect. More then 40 components have been identified in Citri oil. The major components in the oil is (+)-limonen. The aim of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial activity of Citri oil against aerobic bacteria isolated from patients with infections of oral cavity and respiratory tract. Materials and methods. A total 36 strains of aerobic bacteria isolated from patients and 5 reference strains were tested. The data obtained following genera of bacteria: Staphylococcus (8 strains), Enterococcus (7), Corynebacterium (3), Acinetobacter (4), Citrobacter (2), Escherichia (3), Klebsiella (2), Pseudomonas (5), Serratia (2) and 5 reference strains from genus: Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212, Acinetobacter baumannii ATCC 19606, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 i Klebsiella pneumoniae ATCC 13883. Susceptibility (MIC) was determined the serial dilution method Citri oil in Mueller-Hinton agar. The inoculums contained 105 CFU per spot was seeded with Steers replicator upon the surface of agar with and without Citri oil (bacterial strains growth control). Incubation the plates was performed in aerobic conditions at 37°C for 24 hours. MIC’s values were defined as the lowest concentrations of oil that inhibited visible growth of the tested aerobic bacteria. The results showed, that the more susceptible to Citri oil was Gram-positive cocci from genus Staphylococcus aureus (MIC 7.5-20.0 mg/ml). The tested other cocci and Gram-positive rods from genus Corynebacterium xerosis were less susceptible (MIC 7.5-20.0 mg/ml). The essential oil was less effective against Gram-negative rods. The growth pf the strains were inhibited by concentrations from 7.5 to ≥ 20.0 mg/ml. The Citri oil was more active against Grampositive strains than Gram-negative aerobic bacteria.
