THE ANALYSIS OF THE REPUBLICAN PEOPLE’S PARTY’S IDEOLOGICAL CHANGE AND TRANSFORMATION PROCESS DURING ONE-PARTY RULE PERIOD (1923-1950)

Abstract
This study analyses the Republican People’s Party’s (CHP) ideological change and transformation process, which inner and outer political, social and economic happenings caused during one-party rule period (1923-1950). Although CHP tightly coupled Kemalist ideological identity at this period, when political discourses and government policies are analyzed, it is seen that there wasn’t ideological line drawn with a sharp line. As CHP set forth a revolutionary-reformist, laisist, (as economic view) liberal ideological position in 1927, it set forth bureaucratic conservative, extreme laisist, (as economic view) extreme statist, (as government view) authoritarian in 1935; (as government view) extreme authoritarian in 1941 and moderate laisist, (as economic view) liberal, (as government view) semi-democrat (or relatively democrat) ideological position in 1949. During elapsed time, nationalism’s context changed, populism suffered from semantic erosion, only republicanism came into prominence as an indispensable-nontransformed ideological principle. It is possible to address this ideological change and transformation process as an ideological chaos or continuously searching direction in contrasts.
