The assessment of selected somatic traits and motor organs in sportspeople suffering from back pain

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2012, Vol 28, Issue 4

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to compare the selected somatic traits and motor organs between sportspeople with back pain and controls –their non-training peers. It has been assumed that sportspeople with back pain have dysfunctions both in the alignment and function of motor organs. The study was conducted on the students of Physical Education Department at Paweł Włodkowic University College in Płock, Poland. The subjects were 13 females and 26 males who had been practicing one of the following sport disciplines: team games, athletics, martial arts, swimming and horse riding for at least 5 years and had suffered from back pain symptoms for the last 6 months. The control group consisted of 11 females and 28 males, randomly selected from the same Department, but not having back pain symptoms. All the subjects were assessed for body weight and height, Rohrer’s weight-height index and BMI, thoracic kyphosis angle, lumbar lordosis angle, pelvic geometry in sagittal, frontal and transverse planes as well as sagittal-plane mobility of the spine. It was found that students practicing sports and suffering from back pain symptoms had a similar body constitution, pelvic geometry, shape and mobility of the spine as compared to the controls. The only difference between the tested and the control group was mobility of the lumbar spine among the tested males. The competitors’ training plan should include an individualized program of exercises compensating the adverse effects of monotypic motion, specific for a given sport discipline.
