The chawuwi: territorial constructions in the traditional fishing of lake titicaca

Abstract

The present article portrays how the trawlers of Lake Titicaca, known as “traditional fishermen” construct fishing territories in the depths of the lake. Firstly, are they explore the knowledge they have of locating fishing sites through the location of fish banks - through the observation of seagulls (Loza 2006) and the location of the kankani. Subsequently, the process of spatial appropriation of these places, present in the development of the fishing, is described, with the location of the fish bank in the place and its respective obtaining of productive fishing; At the same time, also describes the respect to the goddess of Lake Titicaca and its fish, and the identity construction of the trawler fishermen. Finally, under the living code of Chawuwi, word of the Aymara language that trawlers use to refer to fishing sites, is argued their territorial construction as lived territories (Ther 2008), which is evidenced in the practice of their appropriation spatial, in the peculiarities of their location, location, appropriation and fishing exploitation that they perform in these places, and the sociocultural dynamics present in the sames.
