THE CONCENTRATION OF THIOBARBITURIC ACID REACTIVE SUBSTANCES (TBARS) AND VITAMINS A AND E IN BLOOD OF AMATEUR ATHLETES AFTER SINGLE WHOLE-BODY CRYOSTIMULATION

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2011, Vol 27, Issue 1

Abstract

The whole-body cryostimulation (WBC) is the action of extremely low temperatures (from -100°C to -160°C) on the whole body surface in the time from 1 to 3 min. The effect of single WBC on the concentration of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and the concetration of low-molecular antioxidants (vitamins A and E) was studied in blood of amateur sportsmen. The studied group consisted of 12 healthy men, volunteers, amateur athletes. The subjects mean age was 23.8±1.9 years. The subjects underwent 2 min WBC at the temperature of -120°C and next 30 min exercise on the cycloergometer. On the first day of the study venous blood was taken three times: before entering the cryo-chamber, immediately after exit and after exercise on the cycloergometer. On the second day of study, a week after exercise preceded by stimulation in cryo-chamber, the blood was taken the fourth time, after exercise without WBC (control). The obtained results were subjected to statistic analysis using using ANOVA test. The changes at the level p<0.05 were accepted as a statistically significant.Statistically significant changes of TBARS and vitamins A and E concentrations in blood of amateur sportsmen subjected to both whole-body cryostimulation and aereobic exercise were not revealed.A single WBC had no significant impact on the oxidative stress parameters. However, the observed tendencies may suggest that a single whole-body cryostimulation helps to restore oxidative-antioxidative balance after exercise.
