THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE TRIBOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF ECOLOGICAL GREASES

Abstract
Greases based on non-toxic oils and additives were developed for use in machinery bearings in which the use of non-toxic lubricants is desirable. Tribological experiments conducted under conditions of constant load of the friction couple as well as scuffing conditions determined the amount of inorganic lubricant additive used. Energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) was used to examine the composition of the surface layer of wear scars. An increased amount of carbon and oxygen was observed as compared to the friction couple material. We can assume that formed carbides and oxides modify the surface layer making it more resistant against wear and scuffing. Based on the obtained results, a composition of ecologically safe grease was selected. It can be used as an efficient substitute for commercial bearing grease.<br/><br/>
