The dynamics of high technology industries and the development of knowledge clusters. The case of the Route 128 cluster

Abstract

The growing importance of knowledge for innovation processes and the development of regions resulted in the emergence of a new term – knowledge cluster. According to the OECD definition, a knowledge cluster or a knowledge-based cluster (KBC) directly uses the results of studies conducted in public and private R&D units. Such structures consist of innovative companies of the high-tech sector. The Route 128 cluster (the metropolitan region of Boston, Massachusetts) and the Silicon Valley (Silicon Valley in California) are just two examples of some of the largest and most innovative clusters in the world. This paper discusses the theoretical concepts and provides empirical evidence regarding the process of creation, development and growth of the importance of Route 128 as a KBC. The main hypothesis is that the changes in the specialization of the cluster in the 80s were partly related to the changes in the dynamics of the high-tech industry, mainly the formation of new high-tech industries.
