THE EFFECT OF BODY ROTATION DIRECTION INTERACTING WITH VESTIBULAR FUNCTION ON POSTURAL STABILITY LEVEL ON AN UNSTABLE BASE

Abstract

[b]Background.[/b] The aim of the paper is to define the effect of body rotation direction in interaction with the vestibular organ function, on the level of postural stability in the subjects tested under con­ditions of an unstable ground. Two research questions were posed: (1) whether and to what extent the interaction with vestibular system function, evoked by body rotation to the right and left on Bara­ny’s chair, affects the stability level when balancing on an unstable ground? and (2) whether the chan­ges in stability level are due to the opposite direction of rotation and are similar as related to both planes of motion (namely the frontal and the sagittal plane)?[b]Material and methods.[/b] 20 young and able-bodied subjects (10 females and 10 males) participat­ed in the study. Postural stability level was determined using a balance platform. The vestibular func­tion was interfered with using Barany’s chair. Immediately after rotation on the Barany’s chair, the subject stood on the balance platform on both legs with their feet parallel and performed a balance task under conditions of visual feedback. Stability level measurements were carried out in the frontal and sagittal planes for both directions of rotation on the chair (to the right and left). [b]Results and Conclusions.[/b] In the sagittal plane, after body rotation to the left, better values of all parameters were obtained for the right sways of the platform and with the right-sided rotation a higher stability level was noted at the left side. In the sagittal plane, the change of rotation direction on the Barany’s chair slightly yet significantly influenced the stability level which turned out higher with the left-sided rotation. Regardless the direction of the earlier body rotation in the subjects, a higher sta­bility level was noted in the sagittal plane.
