Journal Title: Journal of Science and today’s world - Year 2017, Vol 6, Issue 11

Abstract

The main objective of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) on mental health and irrational beliefs of mothers with autistic children. To this end, a CBT approach was taken in this study. The research sample included 30 women with autistic children who were selected by non-random sampling in Shiraz. Mothers with autistic children were interviewed clinically by DSM-IV-TR technique. Then, mothers with severe psychiatric disorder were studied. In the pretest phase, mental health and irrational beliefs questionnaires were distributed among the respondents in the two control and experimental groups, each with 15 members. Then, the experimental group underwent the treatment in the form of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for ten sessions, and each session lasted 75 minutes on a weekly basis, while the control group did not receive any experimental or interventional therapy. The instruments used to collect data were the Irrational Beliefs Test and Mental Health Questionnaire that were administered individually once before cognitive-behavioral therapy and once after the end of the intervention sessions on two experiment and control groups. Covariance analysis was used in this study to analyze the data and to evaluate the effect of cognitive-behavioral therapy on irrational beliefs and mental health. The results of this study showed that cognitive behavioral therapy was effective in reducing irrational beliefs in the experimental group. Also, CBT has improved the general health of the participants in the experimental group. Therefore, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can be considered as one of the beneficial therapeutic interventions for the adaptation of mothers with autistic children, which in fact facilitates their adaptation to the psychological problems caused by it such as anxiety, depression, sleep problems, communication problems, and so on.
