Journal Title: Conjuntura Austral: journal of the Global South - Year 2017, Vol 8, Issue 44

Abstract

This paper examines the importance of the Treaty of Madrid in the formation of the western border of Brazil, especially in the region of the Captaincy of Mato Grosso, in the 18th century. It also presents an analysis of the importance of social dynamics in the region of Mato Grosso in that century, with emphasis on the interrelations between Portuguese and indigenous societies (Guaicurus and Paiaguás), to legitimize the Portuguese Crown.
